Even before Al Capone and Lucky Luciano were players at the 1932 Democratic National Convention, stories about career criminals getting involved in U.S. politics had become legendary.
Decades later, the biggest Democrats in Pennsylvania were more than happy to accept donations, aka dirty money, from Philadelphia's leading union boss John J. โJohnny Docโ Dougherty.
Among them are two top-tier recruits running for U.S. Senate.
Per the NRSC:
IBEW Local 98 is theย biggest independent sourceย of campaign money in Pennsylvania. Last month, its business manager, John Dougherty, announced he would resign following his conviction on Federal conspiracy and bribery charges. He faces a maximum of up to 20 years in prison.ย

According to theย Philadelphia Inquirer:ย โThe list of recent beneficiaries of Local 98 donations includes some of the biggest names in state politicsโฆ [John] Fetterman, now a top candidate for U.S. Senate, got $25,000 in 2018. State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, another Democratic Senate contender, has received $14,000 since 2018. (Both of those donations were for their state races, not their Senate campaigns, which face more strict limits on contributions)โฆ
โFetterman, through a spokesperson, declined to comment. Kenyatta's campaign did not respond to messagesโฆโ
So much for protecting hardworking Pennsylvanians against corruption or answering tough questions.
