A former Fox News star-turned-CBS News correspondent has a controversial warning in his new book โThe Big Truth: Upholding Democracy in the Age of โThe Big Lie.'โ
That unfounded election conspiracy theories have placed our democracy on the precipice.
At least that's what CBS News' chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett and CBS elections law contributor David Becker warn about in their new book.
Just a few years ago, Garrett received widespread praise from conservatives for asking then-President Barack Obama if he was โcontentโ with leaving four Americans to rot in Iranian jails in exchange for securing the Iran Nuclear Deal. At the time, pro-Trump celebrity Dennis Miller told Bill O'Reilly that Garrett was one of the few White House correspondents he trusted. It's hard to imagine Miller saying the same thing today.
The left-wing Daily Beast gave Garrett and Becker's book a positive review. The Daily Beast's Corbin Bolies describes how the book evolved after the U.S. Capitol riot:
The book serves, in their words, as a โmeditationโ on the Machiavellian plot, along with how such a scheme could be concocted.
It opens with alternate Januarys in both 2023 and 2017, offering ideas of what the U.S. could or couldย haveย looked like had either Democrats employed the same tactics Republicans had after Hillary Clinton lost in 2016 or if Texas chooses to effectively secede if House Democrats waver on seating its delegation in the 2022 midterms.
Even the Daily Beast called the scenarios โa tad alarmistโ:
The idea was to outline the worst-case scenarios in each of those contexts by referencing what had already happened, particularly as Texas had enacted laws directly in response to the Big Lie. Garrett said his first attempts at writing the chapters were even more climactic, requiring Becker to rein him in. โWe didn't want to terrify people,โ Garrett said.
Still, Garrett claimed that America is 85% of the way toward a new civil war during a meeting with journalists at the Daily Beast.
โThe Big Truthโ includes interviews with members of the Jan. 6 committee, including Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.)
Garrett added that he hopes to start a dialogue with Trump-supporting Republicans:
โYou might have reasonable questions. Fine. We don't discourage reasonable questions, and we don't patronize those who have them,โ Garrett said. โWe try to write it in the spirit to say, โFine, that's okay. Not only do we not condemn you, we're here for you.' Because ultimately, David and I believe that there are far more people of goodwill and good faith in this country who, if they just step back a stride or two, will come to a different conclusion.โ

condescending media proselytizers–yep–that’ll make all the difference. . .
Reeks of arrogance. They really think a lot of themselves. I, not so much.
Whats to compromise with taking the country towards communism? That’s the gorilla the libs don’t want to admit
garrett was always considered a token libtard in his time at Faux. But maybe he got if right THIS time. And his party is the ones conducting the destruction!
& he seeded when under FNC alone or prior
Unless things chance considerably after November, a civil war might be the only solution. Biden and the Dems are pissing Normal people off, and the courts seem to increasingly take their side. When there is no justice there can be no peace. Dems are doing great damage to our nation and to our children.
