Republicans are gearing up to make big waves once they retake a majority in Congress.
First up on the chopping block could be Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas due to his gross โdereliction of dutyโ at the U.S.-Mexico border.
On Wednesday, Sens. Lindsey Graham (R- S.C.) and Ted Cruz (R- Tx) sent a letter to Mayorkas containing Customs and Border Patrol data that shows the situation at the border has rapidly deteriorated since he took office. The senators warned that if the problem is not corrected soon lawmakers will be forced to consider impeachment.
โThis is gross dereliction of duty and, if not corrected swiftly, could provide grounds for impeachment,โ the senators wrote.
According to CBP, there have been โover 4.4 million illegal crossings, including over 3.5 million apprehensions by CBP and at least 900,000 gotaways, who evaded apprehension.โ
The senators noted that the sheer number of illegal migrants crossing into the country isn't the only concern, the rapid increase in drugs pouring into the country is another concern at the forefront of lawmakers' and citizens' minds.
Cruz and Graham accused Mayorkas of enabling a drug production and smuggling enterprise by Mexican cartels with China-supplied drug ingredients that directly contributed to the โfentanyl-fueledโ opioid pandemic that claimed the lives of more than 100,000 Americans last year.
Fentanyl, which has become the leading cause of death of Americans ages 18 to 45, is rapidly pouring into the country through the border. Last month more than 2,000 pounds of the drug was taken at the border, that amount has the potential to kill over 500 million people.
โDrug cartels produce bulk amounts of fentanyl in Mexico, using the Chinese-supplied ingredients, and smuggle the drug across the U.S.-Mexico border,โ the senators explained in their letter. โThis amounts to a multi-billion dollar business for transnational criminal organizations, who then launder the money out of the United States and back into China.โ
The Republican senators also warned that the โchaosโ at the southern border โpresents a prime opportunity for terrorists to enter the United States undetected.โ So far, at โleast 78 individuals on the Terrorist Screening Databaseโ so far in fiscal year 2022 โ more than twice as many apprehended in the past five fiscal years combined.
โIt is a near certainty that terrorists have already entered the United States undetected, taking advantage of the lenient border policies you have put into place,โ the senators wrote. โIt is only a matter of time until we will see an attack on American soil from such terrorists.โ
