According to information released to the January 6 Committee, a โsizable percentageโ of FBI agents and other support personnel are โsympatheticโ toward the Capitol rioters.
The newly released information comes from an email sent toย Paul Abbate, now the No. 2 official at the Bureau.ย It was publiclyย released through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
The unknown sender was trying to send a warning about conservative political leanings inside the Bureau but clearly had his own liberal political bias as can be inferred by some of his comments condoning violent Black Lives Matter (BLM) rioters I note below.
While his observations are very difficult to corroborate, if accurate, shows that a large number of FBI employees and field agents believe the Bureau's hyper-zealous persecution of Capitol rioters and others associated with the mass protest on Jan. 6 is wrong and politically motivated.
At the time, Abbate was the associate deputy director in charge of FBI personnel, budget, administration and infrastructure. The next month, he was named deputy director, the highest-ranking official after Director Christopher Wray. (RELATED: FBI Director Breaks Silence Following Mar-a-Lago Raid)
The email to Abbate was tagged as โexternal' meaning it didn't come from inside the FBI's internal email system. So, the sender, whose name was redacted, was either a former FBI official or a current one simply using a personal email.
However, Abbate acknowledged and responded, which indicates he knew the sender or understood he was, or had been, affiliated with the Bureau. Abbate replied saying: โThank you [redacted] for sharing everything below.โ
And the sender had some very interesting things to say.
Among themย he wrote:
There's no good way to say it, so I'll just be direct: from my first-hand and second-hand information from conversations since January 6th there is, at best, a sizable percentage of the employee population that felt sympathetic to the group that stormed the Capitol.
He added that these FBI employees believed the Capitol riot was no different than the BLM protests of the summer of 2020.
This is something I have argued from the beginning.
As an observer at the Capitol on January 6, I condemned the violence immediately. Butย Iย also noted that it wasn't a โcoup' or an โinsurrection.'
I added that the BLM riots just months earlier had been just as violent, or more so, and directed against federal buildings and officers, as well as private businesses and local police.
Kyle Seraphin, an FBI special agentย suspended over his refusal to engage in a political witch hunt against Capitol rioters,ย said in an interviewย that, at the time, heย thought that a bunch of โgoofballsโ were behind the Capitol attack. (RELATED: Defense Attorneys Say at Least 20 Federal โAssets' at Capitol on Jan. 6; No Plot by Defendants)
We were laughing about it, and there's no other way to say it. We were literally laughing, people were cracking up, you know, somebody has Nancy Pelosi's podium. Is that the way that our country is supposed to act? No, but these were a bunch of clowns, that's not what an insurrection looks like to me.
But the clueless email sender exposed his own liberal bias whenย he noted:
I literally had to explain to an agent from a โblue state' office the difference between opportunists burning and looting during protests that stemmed legitimate grievance to police brutality vs. an insurgent mob whose purpose was to prevent the execution of democratic processes at the behest of a sitting president. One is a smattering of criminals, the other is an organized group of domestic terrorists.
Apparently, the sender didn't realize that the โsmatteringโ of BLM criminals he mentioned injured over 2,000 police officers and caused a record $2 billion in property damages in cities across the nation over a several-month period.
The violent BLM riots also directly or indirectly caused dozens of deaths.
Meanwhile, his โorganized group of domestic terroristsโ were less than a couple of hundred unarmed rioters, out of tens of thousands of peaceful protesters outside, who were violent for a couple of hours.
Meanwhile, the only person killed during the Capitol riot was an unarmed protester, Ashli Babbitt.
Sadly though, the sender's views coincide with the views of Biden's Department of Justice and FBI Director Wray.
The FBI officially sees the Jan. 6 riots as an example of domestic terrorism Wrayย said in May 2021ย before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
He added ridiculously that the rioters were โon the same level with ISIS and homegrown violent extremists.โ
Fortunately, a lot of people inside the Bureau apparently don't agree withย Wray's idiotic nonsense.
The sender alsoย said thatย an official in one FBI office in a โred stateโ had told him that more than 70% of that office's counterterrorism team and about 75% of its agents condemned the violence at the Capitol, โbut could understand where the frustration was coming from.โ
The sender added that: โSeveral [FBI employees] also lamented that the only reason this violent activity is getting more attention is because of โpolitical correctness.'โ
While the Bureau has enacted one of the largest manhunts in history over the Jan. 6 riot,ย a source toldย NBC News that:
โThere are definitely varying degrees of enthusiasm from agents across the country,โ one source close to the investigation said. The source said it was โdisappointingโ to see a โlackluster responseโ from some special agents, while noting that there were many at the FBI who did their job regardless of politics.
To me, this information shows the opposite.
It is encouraging that a โsizable percentage' of FBI personnel understand the politicized nature of the Jan. 6 witch hunts.ย
And also shows that maybe, just maybe, with a proper house cleaning at the top, the FBI can still be saved.ย ALD
