A gunman in Newark, New Jersey sparked a chaotic scene this afternoon when he opened fire from an elevated position on police officers serving a warrant at an apartment building.
The suspect, wielding a long gun, injured two officers. Paramedics have transported both to University Hospital where they are expected to survive.
The suspect is not in custody but is believed to be contained within the building from where the shooting occurred.
A large number of law enforcement personnel and equipment from multiple jurisdictions, including tactical units, drones and helicopters have cordoned off a residential neighborhood of modest and tidy homes. (RELATED: Two Shot Outside of New York Gubernatorial Candidate's Home)

A bullet hit an officer in the neck. One round punctured another officer's leg.

Federal investigators with the FBI and ATF confirmed they were sending resources to the scene as well.

Neighbors describe the area as relatively quiet and said major crime was not common in that part of Newark.
The incident occurred 10 miles from New York City. New Jersey State Assemblyman Ralph Caputo (D), who represents portions of Newark, described the neighborhood as โa nice areaโ before adding that โin this day and age no place is immune to violence.โ
Police are urging local residents to remain inside and keep their doors locked.
