Following the violent attack on her husband, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., says her retirement plans have changed.
In her first public interview since the attack, Pelosi told CNN's Anderson Cooper that her decision will be affected but stopped short of revealing any details.
โI have to say my decision will be affected about what happened the last week or two,โ Pelosi said.
Pelosi's full interview with CNN is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. on โAC360.โ
Pelosi described being awoken by Capitol Police the morning of the attack for the first time. (RELATED: San Fransisco Police Update on Paul Pelosi Attack)
โI was sleeping in Washington, D.C., I had just gotten in the night before from San Francisco, and I hear the doorbell ring and think, it's five something, I look up I see it's five, it must be the wrong apartment. No. It rings again and then bang, bang, bang, bang, bang on the door,โ she told Cooper.
โSo I run to the door and I was very scared, I see the Capitol Police, and they said we have to come in to talk to you,โ she added.
โAnd so they came in,โ she said, referring to the police. โAt that time we didn't even know where he was or what his condition was, we just knew there was an assault on him in our home.โ
Paul Pelosi, 82, was attacked in his home by David DePape, 42, and sustained multiple injuries including a fractured skull. Nancy Pelosi, 82, has faced increased pressure to retire especially if Republicans regain control of Congress, but the politician has held firmly to her seat. However, in recent months more lawmakers have begun pushing for a โgenerational changeโ throughout the party, adding to the pressure Pelosi is already facing.
Recently, Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger said she wants โnew leadersโ in Congress in dig at Pelosi. (RELATED: Frontrunner Emerges to Replace Pelosi)
โThis moment marks a failure of House leadership โ and it's yet another example of why I believe that theย Democratic Partyย needs new leaders in the halls of Capitol Hill, as I have long made known,โ Spanberger said in a statement.
In 2018, Pelosi promised that she would give up the Speaker's gavel at the end of this term, but some Democrats are hesitant to believe her.
Republicans are poised to win control of the House of Representatives and current House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy is not expected to face any House challengers for the position.
