Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received a COVID relief payment from Uncle Sam on June 22, 2021. Like millions of Americans, he received a stimulus check after the 2020 CARES Act became law.
However, Tsarnaev owes more than $101 million to the victims of his attack. So far, he's paid them precisely nothing.
Yet despite being confined to a cell the size of an elevator, Tsarnaev has received over $21,000 from supporters. He's sent most of that money to his siblings. Currently, $3,885.06 remains in his inmate trust account.
Nathaniel R. Mendell, the acting U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, wants that to end now.
Mendell asked a federal judge Wednesday to order all of the remaining funds in Tsarnaev's account to go towards the payment of criminal penalties.
Fox News further reports:
โBy Congressional mandate, the United States has a statutory duty to collect restitution owed to crime victims,โ prosecutors said in the document, citing a lien placed on Tsarnaev's property, including his trust account, after his conviction.

โThe United States submits that the requested relief is reasonable and appropriate in this instance,โ it adds, โespecially in light of the Defendant prioritizing payments to his siblings over the victims of his crimes.โย
Following his conviction, Tsarnaev was sentenced to death, but the penalty was overturned in 2020 after a court ruled that a trial judge erred by excluding some evidence. Anย appeal to reinstate his death sentenceย is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.
It wasn't explained how Tsarnaev received a COVID relief payment.ย
