A federal judge has put the Biden administration's attempt to end the Trump-era โRemain in Mexicoโ policy on hold.
At least for now.
The policy requires asylum-seekers to stay in Mexico while U.S. authorities process their claims.
Federal Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk has stayed the administration's termination orders until litigation concerning President Biden's bid to end the policy is resolved.
NBC News explains:
Kacsmaryk's ruling is a setback for President Joe Biden, whose administration first sought to end the โRemain in Mexicoโ policy, formally known as the Migrant Protection Protocols, when he took office in January 2021.
Theย Supreme Courtย said in aย 5-4 rulingย in June that the Biden administration had acted properly in seeking to end the policy, reversing a federal appeals court ruling thatย rejected a fresh attemptย to end the policy in October 2021. The administration was previously forced to reinstate the policy afterย Texas and Missouri sued.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who filed suit to block the policy from being lifted, praised the judge's orderย on Twitter.
โBiden's open-border agenda won't survive my legal attacks,โ Paxton said Thursday.
