It is also saying what the U.S. and other NATO members should be saying โ the Alliance should defend all allies even if not formally in NATO.
A minesweeper is already on the way to the Mediterranean and Black Sea, and a frigate will be sent within three or four days to beef up NATO forces already there, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles told reporters Thursday.
The Iberian NATO ally is also considering sending fighter jets to Bulgaria in a bid to deter Russian aggression,ย Reuters reported.

And Spain's rhetoric is on point, even as it pushes for a diplomatic solution.
The Hillย reportsย that Spain's Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on Thursday: โRussia cannot tell any country what to do, so NATO will protect and defend the sovereignty of any country that can or wants to join NATO.โ
This strong statement was slightly undermined though, when she added the boilerplate comments that Spain wants an โexclusively diplomatic responseโ to resolve the conflict.ย But the primary message was clear.
Ukraine is currently not formally part of NATO but has asked to join, something Russia has staunchly opposed, and has an existing political-military relationship.
