ANALYSIS โ The absolute disaster that is Communist China's COVID response under Supreme Leader Xi Jinping shows how fragile and brittle totalitarian regimes ultimately are.
Like the former Sovietย Union, China under Xi has been feverishly building up its military power to equal, if not surpass the Unitedย States.
Unlike the USSR, China also has an economy that rivals America's.
And Xi is doing all this to challenge the United States as world leader and remake the global order in China's image.
All this poses a serious threat to the U.S. and the West.
And until recently, things were looking good for Xi in 2022 as he began a second decade as China's leader and consolidated absolute power.
At the center of Xi's agenda this year was his ridiculous zero-COVID policy intended to show the world his regime's superiority.
Instead, 2022 has ended with an absolute COVID disaster for Xi.
As CNN notes:
China had its most difficult year under Xi's rule as it reeled fromย his costly zero-Covid policyย โ from months ofย overzealous enforcementย that crushed the economy and stoked historic public discontent, to aย wholesale abandonmentย so abrupt that left a fragile health system scrambling to cope with an explosion of cases.
The chaos and disarray is a stark contrast to the start of the year, when Beijing showcased the success of its Covid containment measures by keeping the coronavirus largely at bay from theย Winter Olympics.
Over the span of a year, Xi's hallmark pandemic policy has turned from a source of legitimacy for the ruling Communist Party into a spiraling crisis that threatens to undermine it.
As anย unprecedented wave of infectionsย โ andย deathsย โ sweeps the country, many have questioned why after sacrificing so much under zero-Covid and waiting for so long to reopen, the government ultimately let the virus rip through a population with little prior warning or preparation.
But this is a perfect example of why totalitarian regimes, while apparently powerful and effective, cannot last.
Without any checks and balances, or the regular challenge of elections, these regimes are capricious, and can do unbelievable damage in short order.
As the Soviet Union showed, this can quickly lead to sudden collapse.
And this is something Xi and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) rightly worry about every single day.
And today, maybe more than other days.ย ALD
