Incoming Pennsylvania Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro appears ready to work with Republicans and can even prove it. New reports indicate his plans to cross party lines to nominate Republican Al Schmidt as secretary of the Commonwealth.
โAl Schmidt has a proven track record of defending our democracy, protecting voting rights, and standing up to extremism โ even in the face of grave threats โ and I am proud to nominate him to be Pennsylvania's next Secretary of the Commonwealth,โ Shapiro said in a statement,ย perย theย Philadelphia Inquirer.
โOur elections are the foundation of our democracy, and I look forward to working with anyone โ regardless of party โ to ensure they remain free and fair here in Pennsylvania, and that we do more to ensure every eligible voter can make their voice heard,โ Shapiro added.
After he is officially nominated, Schmidt must get confirmed by a two-thirds vote in the state Senate to secure the post. Republicans maintained control of the Pennsylvania Senate in the midterm elections.
Schmidt is poised to receive a Presidential Citizens Medal from President Joe Biden Friday. He stepped down from his perch at Philadelphia's election board in 2021 to spearhead the Committee of Seventy, a pro-democracy nonprofit organization.
Shapiro is set to be sworn into office on Jan. 17.

It would be great for America if Gaetz resigns. Most Americans want legislators, whether Republican or Democrat, who work together for the greater good of all Americans.
Most US citizens, and ALL Americans, what legislators to do the right thing. Anyone that exercises the reasoning ability of a 4 year old knows that is OFTEN the exact opposite of working with most politicians.
My 1st thought is that this reinforces the uniparty belief, but I donโt know Mr. Shapiro so I could be wrong.
You’re not.
