For the second time in two days, the U.S. military has shot down what North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) calls a โhigh altitude airborne object.โ
NORAD tracked the object, another possible spy balloon, over Canada's Yukon Territory earlier Saturday. With the approval of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a U.S. fighter entered Canadian airspace to shoot it down.
Officials have not confirmed the identity of the object.
Meanwhile, NORAD is monitoring additional objects that could be spy balloons.
Per The New York Times:
โI ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace,โ Mr. Trudeau said in a statement he posted on Twitter. He said an American F-22 with the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which is operated jointly by the United States and Canada, โshot down the object over the Yukon.โ
As with the object that President Biden ordered shot down on Friday, officials said they had yet to determine just what was shot down over the Yukon Territory.
Mr. Trudeau said he had spoken with Mr. Biden Saturday afternoon. โCanadian Forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object,โ he said in his Twitter post, adding, โThank you to NORAD for keeping the watch over North America.โ
In a statement, NORAD said that it had โpositively identified a high-altitude airborne object over Northern Canadaโ and declined to discuss specifics.
