A business owner in a crime-ridden city recently used his firearm to stop a burglar stealing from his business.
The Portland, Oregon business owner stopped an individual Monday who โtried breaking into a business on Northeast Columbia Boulevard, east of Northeast 33rd Avenue. During the alleged break-in, police say the suspect and business owner got into a confrontation and shots were fired. The Portland Police Bureau said the owner, who was not hurt in the incident, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigatorsโ per local Oregon news outlet KOIN 6.
Still, leftist legislators and progressive voters in the state are trying to make self-defense gun uses near null and void.
Last fall, voters in the state narrowly passed Ballot Measure 114 which included provisions such as limiting the number of rounds that can be carried in a magazine to 10 and also enacting a โpermit-to-purchase system.โ
One group that has been fighting the measure in court is the Second Amendment Foundation, led by its founder and president Alan Gottlieb.
The suit filed in November of 2022 alleges that Measure 114's โpermits to purchaseโ provisions โviolate the Second and 14th Amendments. The โproper-cause requirement violates the Fourteenth Amendment in that it prevents law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their right to keep and bear arms.โ
Gottlieb also reaffirmed his group's commitment to fighting for gun rights โ even in deep blue states โ while speaking with American Liberty News today:
โWe at SAF are using the courts to protect Americans' gun rights โ so that Americans can protect themselves, their families, and their livelihoods. This is why SAF has filed a lawsuit against Oregon's new anti-gun law โ
Renowned Second Amendment researcher John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center frequently published articles and submit legislative testimony about the lack of impact that anti-gun laws have.
While testifying on against a gun ban in Oregon's neighboring state if California, Lott wrote โThat there is โno credible evidence' that such laws โhave any meaningful effect of reducing gun homicides and no discernable crime-reduction impact.'After a brief bench trial, the judge reached his decision in June, 2021. He overturned California's ban, and quoted Lott's assessment verbatim,โ as reported by The New Yorker in 2022.
