The district attorney overseeing Alec Baldwinโs fatal โRustโ movie shooting is reportedly stepping down from the case.
On Wednesday, Fox News reported New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies is excusing herself from the case to focus on โbroader public safety needsโ and has appointed Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis to serve as โspecial prosecutors.โ
โMorrissey's and Lewis' extensive experience and trial expertise will allow the state to pursue justice for Halyna Hutchins and ensure that in New Mexico everyone is held accountable under the law,โ Heather Brewer, spokesperson, First New Mexico Judicial District Attorney, said in a statement.
โCarmack-Altwies will continue her record of prosecuting drunken drivers, collaborating with local law enforcement,ย increasing diversion efforts and securing convictions against the most dangerous and prolific offenders,โ Brewer said.
The district attorney added, โMy responsibility to the people of the First Judicial District is greater than any one case, which is why I have chosen toย appoint a special prosecutor inย theย โRust' case.ย
โKari Morrissey and Jason Lewis will unflinchingly pursue justice in the death of Halyna Hutchins on behalf of the people of First Judicial District.โ
Andrea Reeb, the special prosecutorย previously assigned to the case, stepped down earlier this month after Baldwin's attorney successfully argued Reeb's appointment violated theย New Mexicoย constitution because she's also a state legislator. โAfter much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to step down as special prosecutor in the โRust' case,โ Ms. Reeb, a former district attorney, said in a statement on Tuesday. โMy priority in this case โ and in every case I've prosecuted in my 25-year career โ has been justice for the victim. However, it has become clear that the best way I can ensure justice is served in this case is to step down so that the prosecution can focus on the evidence and the facts, which clearly show a complete disregard for basic safety protocols led to the death of Halyna Hutchins.โ
The โ30 Rockโ actor was charged with two counts ofย involuntary manslaughterย earlier this year in connection to the death of Halyna Hutchins. He pleaded not guilty last month.ย (RELATED: Alec Baldwin Pleads โNot Guilty' in Movie Set Shooting)
Hutchins was killed on the New Mexico set of the Western film โRust.โ Director Joel Souza was also wounded by a bullet when live ammunition was accidentally loaded into a weapon fired by Baldwin while rehearsing a scene.
If Baldwin is convicted he faces up to 18 months in prison.

They keep dropping charges against Baldwin. So don’t except him to get any jail time. Justice is taking a long time but they will blame the young lady and Alec will whine that the gun did it not him. Another joke case when a movie Star is involved.

Good thing I won’t be part of the jury. I think it is ludicrous to charge Baldwin with anything!
Alec Baldwin claims to know what is required when handling a gun. On the set, however, he proved to be a liar! He never checked the gun and he deliberately pointed the gun and pulled the trigger. The gun has already been checked and it has been verified the only way it could have fired was to pull the trigger. Baldwin murdered the lady because he never did a responsible check on the gun after it was in his hands.
There is a story hiding behind the curtain, methinks. I just wish that bilious old Hollywood buzzard would blow away and go away.
