Despite criticism from its left flank, CNN announced Wednesday it would host another town hall for a Republican presidential candidate next month.
Network anchor Jake Tapper will host a discussion between Nikki Haley and likely GOP caucus-goers in Iowa.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, June 4, at 8 p.m. ET and will air on CNN, CNN International and CNN en Espaรฑol.
The Daily Wire's Daniel Chaitin has more on the latest developments:
โHaley, who also served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in the Trump administration, will take questions from Tapper and a live audience which is comprised of Iowa Republicans and Iowa voters, who say they will pre-register to participate in the Republican caucuses by the deadline set by the Republican Party of Iowa; and pledge to appear in person at the caucuses,โ the press release said.
CNN held its first Republican presidential town hall earlier this month with former President Donald Trump in New Hampshire, a move thatย stoked leftist outrage. That broadcast drew more than 3 million viewers,ย according to Nielsen ratings, and made headlines for Trump's comments about Ukraine, the debt ceiling, andย clash with anchor Kaitlan Collins.
During the first couple months of Haley's campaign, CNN became involved in controversy whenย now-fired anchor Don Lemonย said Haley was not โin her prime.โ He was responding to Haley advocating for mentalย competency tests for politiciansย over the age of 75. Haley shot back with a tweet. โTo be clear, I am NOT calling for competency tests for Sexist middle-aged CNN anchors; only for people who make our laws and are 75+,โย she posted.
Haley, 51, is eight years younger than the median age of presidential candidates. Prior to serving in the Trump administration, she was South Carolina's first female governor.
Chaitin continues:
There are a number of other GOP candidates in the race, includingย entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy,ย Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), andย former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson. Others who are either expected to enter the contest or are considering a campaign includeย Florida Governor Ron DeSantis,ย former Vice President Mike Pence, andย former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
Former President Donald Trump has a commanding lead nationally in the 2024 nomination contest. However, surveys show a more competitive race in the early GOP primary states.
CNN plans to announce additional town halls in the coming weeks.
