Donald Trump was booked in a Miami courthouse on Tuesday in a federal indictment that accuses him of mishandling classified documents.
Last week, the former president was indicted on 37 counts stemming from Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into his alleged improper retention of classified records at Mar-a-Lago.
The indictment accuses Trump of failing to comply with demands to return classified documents that he had taken from the White House. Some of the documents detail defense and weapons capabilities of the U.S. and details of the U.S. nuclear program.
โThe unauthorized disclosure of these classified documents could put at risk the national security of the United States, foreign relations, the safety of the United States military, and human sources and the continued viability of sensitive intelligence collection methods,โ the indictment said.
Trump has repeatedly dismissed the charges as politically motivated by the Biden administration's Department of Justice.
โON MY WAY TO COURTHOUSE. WITCH HUNT!!! MAGA,โ Trump posted on Truth Social as his motorcade rode on the highway.
Alina Habba, one of Trump's lawyers, called the indictment of her client โthe type of thing you see in dictatorships.โ
โWe are at a turning point in our nation's history,โ Habba said Tuesday outside the Miami federal courthouse where Trump is set to appear at 3 p.m. โThe targeting prosecution of a leading political opponent is the type of thing you see in dictatorships like Cuba and Venezuela. It is commonplace there for rival candidates to be prosecuted, persecuted and put into jail.โ
Trump entered his not-guilty plea to all charges at 3 pm on Tuesday and gave no statement.
After leaving the courthouse Trump traveled to a popular nearby Cuban restaurant in Little Havana.
