In the latest move to punish the Russian government for its unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine, President Biden announced that he plans to revoke normal trade relations with Russia.
Biden also reiterated that the United States would not fight a direct war against Russia. Combined, our two countries have a nuclear arsenal approaching some 13,000 warheads.
The House will vote on legislation to deny โmost favored nation' status to Russia. Most favored nation or (MFN) status means the country with said status cannot receive less favorable treatment than any other country with MFN status.
Biden revealed the European Union and G7 are taking the same actions. Canada already revoked Russia's MFN status last week.
CNBC further reports:
Biden will also sign an executive order to ban U.S. imports of seafood, non-industrial diamonds and vodka and liquors from Russia.
Biden repeatedly singled out Russian President Vladimir Putin, who rules the country as an autocrat.
โPutin is the aggressor,โ said Biden. โAnd Putin must pay the price.โ
Congress is expected to vote next week on legislation to revoke Russia's trade classification within the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Biden needs a majority of the House and Senate to vote to abolish normal trade relations with Russia. But such legislation is expected to pass easily, as CNN's Kaitlan Collins and Manu Raju note:
CNN reported Thursday that bipartisan talks in the Senate had been taking shape to take more aggressive action on Russia's trade status โ after the White House effectively watered down the House-passedย bill banning importing Russian oil, natural gas and coalย into the US.
