Grammy-winning artist Maren Morris is done with country music.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Morris announced her intention to leave the industry. Citing alleged prejudices exposed by the Trump era, Morris blasted her musical peers as โmisogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic.โ
The singer, who recently got a taste of pop music performing on stage with Taylor Swift, proclaimed: โAfter the Trump years, people's biases were on full display.โ
โIt just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music. I call it butt rock.โ
โMusic is supposed to be the voice of the oppressed โ the actual oppressed,โ she added. (RELATED: Fox Forced Jason Aldean To Remove BLM Footage From Hit Music Video: Report)
The Hill has more on the singer-songwriter's remarks:
Referencingย Jason Aldean'sย hit song โTry That in a Small Town,โ which made waves with conservatives, Morris said, โPeople are streaming these songs out of spite.โ
She continued, โIt's not out of true joy or love of the music. It's to own the libs. And that's so not what music is intended for. Music is supposed to be the voice of the oppressed โ theย actualย oppressed. And now it's being used as this really toxic weapon in culture wars.โ
Morris first made political headlines last year when she criticized comments made by Aldean's wife,ย Brittany Aldean,ย regarding gender-affirming care for transgender youth last year. Morris thenย faced backlashย from conservative television hostย Tucker Carlson,ย whose Fox News show displayed on-screen text calling her a โlunatic country person.โ
Morris poked fun at the situation and raised $100,000 for pro-trans organizations by selling a T-shirt playing on the phrase.
Appearing on โRuPaul's Drag Raceโ as a guest judge in January, Morris apologized to contestants for her perception of โhow the country music world has treated the LGBTQ community.โ
โComing from country music and its relationship with LGBTQ+ members, I just want to say I'm sorry,โ she began. โAnd I love you guys for making me feel like a brave voice in country music. So I just thank you guys so much for inspiring me.โ
