Sir Michael Caine, the world-renowned British actor, announced his retirement Saturday.
Caine, 90, who starred in iconic movies beginning in the 1960s, quickly rose to superstardom. A two-time Academy Award winner, he has starred in films collectively earning $7.8 billion worldwide.
His credits include โZuluโ (1964), โAlfieโ (1966), โThe Italian Jobโ (1969), โBattle of Britainโ (1969), โGet Carterโ (1971), โThe Eagle Has Landedโ (1976), โA Bridge Too Farโ (1977), โHannah and Her Sistersโ (1986), โThe Muppet Christmas Carolโ (1992), โThe Cider House Rulesโ (1999), โBatman Beginsโ (2005), โChildren of Menโ (2006), โThe Dark Knightโ (2008), โInceptionโ (2010), โThe Dark Knight Risesโ (2012), โInterstellarโ (2014), โDunkirkโ (2017) and โTenetโ (2020).
From 1952 to 1954, Caine served in the British Army's Royal Fusiliers. While serving in Korea, he witnessed Chinese communist forces launch catastrophic human wave attacks. Seeing these massacres solidified his belief that socialism was not the panacea its supporters claimed. After escaping one particularly life-threatening situation, he vowed to live โevery bloody momentโ as if it was his last.
Caine's career spanned eight decades and more than 160 films. As he looked back on his body of work this weekend, the artist, who never shed his cockney accent, made a touching remark:
โThe only parts I'm liable to get now are 90-year-old menโฆ So I thought, I might as well leave with all this.โ
