One Bay Area county has declared support for California Governor Gavin Newsom's latest radical anti-gun proposal.
San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa announced his support of Newsom's plan to add a 28th Amendment to the constitution, stating โCongress can't fulfill its responsibility of passing common sense gun laws.โ
If the idea ever came to fruition, it would severely limit the protections that currently exist under the Second Amendment by requiring longer wait times for purchasing firearms, as well as universal background checks. The age for purchasing all firearms would also be raised to 21.
Newsom announced his radical proposal via a statement issued by his office, which included the following:
โOur ability to make a more perfect union is literally written into the Constitution,โย said Governor Gavin Newsom. โSo today, I'm proposing the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to do just that. The 28th Amendment will enshrine in the Constitution common sense gun safety measures that Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and gun owners overwhelmingly support โ while leaving the 2nd Amendment unchanged and respecting America's gun-owning tradition.โ
The 28th Amendment will permanently enshrine four broadly supported gun safety principles into the U.S. Constitution:
- Raising the federal minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21;
- Mandating universal background checks to prevent truly dangerous people from purchasing a gun that could be used in a crime;
- Instituting a reasonable waiting period for all gun purchases; and
- Barring civilian purchase of assault weapons that serve no other purpose than to kill as many people as possible in a short amount of time โ weapons of war our nation's founders never foresaw.
Leaders in San Francisco โ where Newsom served as Mayor โ have also backed the proposal.

The state of commifornia can’t go against the United States constitution!
They are playing with fire if the try!
Piece by piece bit by bit these nasty ugly evil America haters will never stop nibbling away the 2A. Personally I believe they really do want a civil war and I am all for it! Hundreds of these nasty godless Demoncraps should be in prison, ALL the J 6ers OUT and and righteous justice needs to be applied!
Hmm – wasn’t SM County where the high sheriff was doing ‘pay for play’ with concealed carry permits? Gimme a big enough of a ‘voluntary’ contribution and she ‘might” give you a permit. Or was it another bay county? Doesn’t really matter as most of the big city counties are firmly in the hands of democRATs.
Infringe, infringe, infringe !!!
These so-called โcommon sense gun safety measuresโ would be more properly described as โNONSENSICALโ, putting the thing in polite terminology.
How droll – a California politician wants a Constitutional amendment which will authorize “common sense” gun laws. And just how will “common sense” be defined? If it intrudes on private rights without providing beneficial effects, is that “common sense”? I mean, we know that Bill Clinton’s assault weapons ban didn’t alter crime statistics or reduce gun violence. Even the far left DA in St. Louis admitted that gun control laws don’t reduce gun violence, let alone violent crime. The latest school massacre just occurred in China, of all places, where NOBODY owns a private gun (seems they use knives and yet still manage to slaughter kids regularly, this latest outrage being the 3rd major such rampage in China this year). Can we also write in common sense laws regarding surgical mutilation of children? How about “common sense” abortion laws? But here’s the reality – look at a political map of California, broken down by PRECINCTS (NOT by Congressional districts, where outrageous gerrymandering makes the state look almost solid blue). By precinct, what you’ll find is that California is a red state, with a couple blue areas around LA and San Fran and a thin line (seldom more than 20 miles wide) along the coast between them.If you want “common sense”, put a fence around the state’s major cities and restrict their idiocies to their urban boundaries. Let’s see how the urban areas do without the hinterlands to support their inanities – and don’t forget to wipe the human feces off your feet when you leave San Fran to visit the folks out in the wine country. .
