California Governor Gavin Newsom has named Laphonza Butler, a former adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris, to fill the Senate seat left by the late Dianne Feinstein. A coalition of Republican hardliners aligned with House Democrats to vote down a stopgap funding bill on Friday, significantly increasing the chances of a government shutdown. Twenty-one Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the legislation, including Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) among others. The final vote was 198-232. The measure advanced in a party-line vote earlier on Friday. The bill did not stand a chance in the Senate, where Democrats were sure to line up against it. Nice try, Fetterman… After a week of backlash, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution late Wednesday formalizing business attire as the proper dress code while on the floor of the chamber. The new written rules include a coat, tie, and slacks for men. The resolution does not detail dress codes for women members.  The bipartisan bill by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) requires that members abide by a dress when on the Senate floor.  The dress code clarification came after Sen. San Fransisco Mayor London Breed (D) unveiled a controversial proposal Tuesday to require anyone receiving welfare to comply with mandatory drug testing and treatment programs as the city struggles to get a handle on its drug and homelessness issues. It’s confirmed… The Wisconsin Department of Corrections acquiesced to the demands of a prisoner convicted of raping their 10-year-old daughter. Mark Campbell, 52, is now incarcerated at Taycheedah Correctional Institution, a women’s prison one hour north of Milwaukee. Campbell, who weighs 225 pounds, identifies and lives as a female. Karma has come for a convicted murderer suspected of killing at least 28 elderly women in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. A fellow inmate murdered Billy Chemirmir, an illegal immigrant from Kenya, at a Texas prison earlier this week. Prosecutors alleged Chemirmir posed as a medical professional or maintenance man to gain access to his victims’ homes before suffocating them. He was eventually convicted in the death of 87-year-old Mary Brooks in October 2022. The mayor of one of the country’s largest cities announced in The Wall Street Journal on Friday that he has switched to the Republican Party. Dallas, Texas Mayor Eric Johnson, previously a Democrat, explained why America’s largest cities need Republicans. Johnson served nine years in the Texas Legislature before winning the 2019 Dallas mayoral election as a Democrat.
