The FBI has arrested former Central California Congressman TJ Cox (D) on charges of federal money laundering and wire fraud. According to unsealed court documents, the aspiring Democratic politician faces 15 counts of wire fraud, 11 counts of money laundering, one count of financial institution fraud and one count of campaign contribution fraud. Cox faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the wire fraud and money laundering charges. The affidavit lays out the arguments investigators successfully made to a federal judge, convincing him they had probable cause to execute a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago. According to the DOJ’s filing, unsealing the search warrant’s probable cause affidavit would jeopardize the ongoing criminal investigation into the former president by providing specific details about the case and its likely direction.
