Large explosions of apparent Ukrainian origin rocked one of Russia’s largest airbases earlier today. Saki Air Base in Crimea, which Russia has occupied since 2014, endured multiple explosions as video footage from panicked beachgoers and other startled civilians shows. The Russian government is characteristically saying that the explosions resulted from an accident that set off aviation munitions. But informed observers noted that the explosions occurred at different locations on the base, possibly both munitions storage sites, which would be extraordinarily careless, even by Russian military standards. Few believed them — even before Ukrainian sources speaking to The New York Times…

Conservative Republican Dan Newhouse has overcome long odds. As one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump for his actions — and inactions — leading up to the U.S. Capitol attack, he immediately became a target for a vengeful ex-president. Elsewhere last week, a Trump-backed, election-denying candidate named John Gibbs defeated incumbent Rep. Peter Meijer in the GOP primary for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee boosted the more extreme Gibbs in ads to likely primary voters, helping put him over the top. Over the weekend, updated results from Washington State confirmed Newhouse…

Ayman al-Zawahri dutifully served as Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenant until a team of Navy SEALs punched his boss’ time card for him in 2011.
