All eyes are on the United States Senate today as the chamber prepares for two Second Amendment showdowns that are likely to happen this week.
The first is over a gun bill the Senate has been working on in the aftermath of last month's tragedy in Uvalde, Texas.
Texas Senator John Cornyn โ the lead Republican negotiator on the bill โ seemed like he was ready to walk away from the table late last week.
He was also booed back home at the Texas Republican Party Convention over the weekend over his involvement in the process.
The following Republicans have previously come out in support of a โcompromiseโ bill framework, although no text has yet been made publicly available:
Mitch McConnell (R-KY), John Cornyn (R-TX), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Richard Burr (R-NC), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Susan Collins (R-ME), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Rob Portman (R-OH), Mitt Romney (R-UT), and Pat Toomey (R-PA).
Another key moment in the fight to preserve our gun rights is the confirmation of Steven Dettelbach to be Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). At this point, confirmation is imminent.
Two Republican Senators โ Susan Collins of Maine and Rob Portman of Ohio โ voted to bring the vote on Dettelbach's nomination before the full chamber last week. The procedural vote was required because the Senate Judiciary Committee previously tied 11 -11 on a vote to bring the nomination up in front of the full Senate body.
On both fronts, Senators do not have time on their side as a two-week recess for the July 4th holiday is scheduled to begin on Friday.

Come after our guns. And you will be a deadman
Congress sure does take a lot of holidays.
John Cornyn, if mess with Our Constitutional Rights it will be the biggest mistake of your life.
I’m a Texan. Cornyn will not receive any more of my votes. He’s been mostly a RINO for years, but this cements his position in that category. I cannot conceive of ANY event that would lead me to support a law that makes it legal to take away my property, but especially property that is explicitly protected by the Constitution. ‘Red flag’ laws are about as anti-Constitutional as you can get. (I have to admit, it is impossible to envision voting for a Democrat in today’s Socialist party, but…)
Senator Cornyn thinks he knows what is best for Texas. In his best interest, He needs to check with the people that put Him in office. He has lost my support and vote. I’ll never give up my rights provided by the second amendment.
