A group of U.S. House conservatives are now pressuring Congress to cancel mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for prospective immigrants applying for U.S. citizenship, arguing the policy is not backed by science and other COVID-19 vaccine mandates have been repealed.
U.S. Representative Thomas Massie's (R-Ky.) H.R. 4726 prohibits the use of federal funds to โadminister, implement, or enforceโ the vaccine mandate, which Massie argues is unnecessary as the Biden administration has declared COVID-19 is no longer a national emergency. โIt's un-American to force COVID vaccines on people who want to become Americans,โ said Massie. โCurrently, our government coerces those who've come to our country legally into taking mRNA vaccines as a condition of fulfilling their dreams of becoming U.S. citizens. H.R. 4726 will finally put an end to this unscientific policy and repeal several of the last remaining COVID mandates.โ
โSpecifically, Massie's legislation would ensure that neither the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) nor the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can require a legal visitor to the United States to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of receiving a visa,โ Massie reports in a statement.
โIn addition, the legislation would prevent these agencies from requiring nonimmigrant aliens to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of seeking permanent residency status. Finally, the bill ensures that these agencies cannot impose a COVID-19 vaccine requirement on legally admitted permanent residents who are seeking to become naturalized citizens,โ Massie adds. The bill's backers are a โwho's whoโ of House conservatives.
