Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Friday that, when it comes to Russia possibly invading Ukraine, โconflict is not inevitableโ โ a sentiment which seems to break from Presidentย Joe Biden, who hasย predictedย that Russia will likely invade Ukraine.
During a press conference at the Pentagon, Austin remarked that NATO, which the United States is part of, is โunifiedย in opposition toย Russia's attempts to undermineย those core values and threatenย peace and security in Europe.โ (RELATED: Generals' Testimony Contradicts Biden's Claims on Afghanistan)
โFirst, conflict is notย inevitable.ย There is still time and spaceย for diplomacy,โ said Austin.ย โThe United States, in lockstepย with our allies and partners, hasย offered Russia a path away fromย crisis and toward greaterย security. Andย the Department of Defense willย continue to support thoseย diplomatic efforts.โ
The โnot inevitableโ quote seemingly stands in contrast to Biden saying during a press conference at the White House last week that Russian Presidentย Vladimir Putinย will invade Ukraine. (RELATED: Biden Tells Ukrainians They Are Going to Lose; Hopes They Kill a Ton of Russians Before They Do)
