Former President Donald Trump is lashing out at the Justice Department on his social media platform.
The posts followed news that the DOJ would likely charge the former president for his allegedly intentional mishandling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago after leaving office. In a letter, federal prosecutors notified Trump's legal team that Trump is a target in Special Counsel Jack Smith's criminal investigation.
The Wall Street Journal has more, including speculation that Smith may bring charges in Florida, where a federal grand jury in Miami heard testimony from a former Trump spokesman on Wednesday:
Taylor Budowich, who now heads the pro-Trump super PAC Make America Great Again, said on Twitter that he โfulfilled a legal obligation to testify in front of a federal grand jury and I answered every question honestly.โ
He called Smith's investigation a โbogus and deeply troubling effort to use the power of the government to โget' Trump,โ but didn't say what questions prosecutors asked. His lawyer, Stanley Woodward, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Budowich was one of several witnesses expected to appear before the Miami grand jury, which people familiar with the matter said had been hearing testimony in recent weeks. Its existence, which Theย Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week, comes as prosecutors have discussed whether to bring a case in Florida or Washington, where a separate grand jury has conducted the majority of the documents probe in recent months.
The investigation has focused on whether Trump mishandled sensitive government information and whether he obstructed the probe into that question. It has closely examined actions Trump took at his Florida resort. The Justice Department might need to bring any criminal charges within the district in which they occurred, some former prosecutors said.
Some observers speculate that prosecutors might want to preempt claims by Trump that he didn't receive a fair trial from a Washington, D.C.-based jury.
One member of the Trump administration, former Attorney General Bill Barr, recently told CBS News that the classified documents case is Trump's biggest legal risk.
And, in Barr's opinion, deservedly so.
