ANALYSIS – Even as the Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) pursues multiple, often politicized charges against former president Donald Trump, the increasing pressure, and mounting evidence of wrongdoing, has forced Biden Attorney General Merrick Garland to finally go after Hunter Biden.
After years of Republicans demanding that the yearslong, slow-rolled investigations into the first son be turned over to a special prosecutor, it's now being done. (RELATED: US Attorney Investigating Hunter Biden Now A Special Counsel, DOJ Confirms)
Garland announced on Friday that he has appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss a special counsel in the investigation of Hunter Biden, apparently focused on influence peddling and corrupt practices representing foreign governments.
The AG said Weiss requested the appointment because “his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel, and he asked to be appointed.”
This after Hunter Biden's former business partner Devon Archer told the House Oversight Committee that Hunter and his father, Joe Biden, spoke on more than 20 calls about Hunter's foreign business deals.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called Archer's testimony “extremely damning” and revealed “the Bidens were in the actual business of influence peddling.” (RELATED: Devon Archer Sits Down With Tucker Carlson, Describes Joe Biden's Calls)
Adding to the pressure for a special prosecutor, an IRS whistleblower recently revealed that Biden's DOJ blocked evidence relating to President Biden's alleged participation in his son's shady business dealings.
IRS agent Joseph Zeigler testified to the House Ways and Means Committee that Merrick Garland and the DOJ interfered with the IRS' investigation into Hunter Biden, including some agents' apparent refusal to review a WhatsApp message sent by Hunter to a Chinese businessman linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Let's see if Weiss will do any better than the DOJ.
Meanwhile, Hunter's sweetheart plea deal over his tax fraud and weapons violation appears dead in the water after blowing up twice, as I wrote about earlier.
This case could also impact the current investigation by the new special prosecutor since that earlier case had included broad immunities from future prosecutions, which have since been denied.
As the Daily Caller reported:
Biden's team had sought immunity for charges unrelated to allegations of tax evasion in a pretrial diversion agreement, prompting Judge Maryellen Noreika to intervene in the deal.
“The Government now believes that the case will not resolve short of a trial,” the court filing states.
The Caller added:
Biden's initial plea deal, which would have had him plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and enter a diversion agreement allowing him to avoid jail time for a felony gun charge, included a promise of broad immunity for future charges that Noreika uncovered during the hearing through careful questioning.
The diversion agreement that contained the immunity provision outlined payments Biden received from his business dealings in China, Ukraine and Romania, which legal experts said could have shielded him from potential future charges under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
The downside is that if the government files charges in another district, it would bring Hunter Biden's case before a different judge than the Trump-appointed Noreika, who has proven highly effective and thorough.
