Queen Elizabeth II โ England's longest-reigning monarch has passed away at the age of 96ย โ per a statement from the royal family.
The world received news this morning that the beloved queen was under close medical supervision with family doctors โconcernedโ for her health.ย
Fox News reported this morning that โQueen Elizabeth's doctors โare concerned for Her Majesty's health.'โ Buckingham Palace made the announcement early Thursday, adding that they recommended she stay under medical supervision at her summer estate in the Scottish Highlands.
โThe Queen remains comfortableโ at Balmoral Castle, the palace said at the time. She celebrated her platinum jubilee earlier this year. Despite relying on a cane since October 2021, and other challenges posed by old age, Elizabeth maintained a rigorous schedule to the end. On Tuesday, she met with conservative leader Liz Truss where the queen formally asked her to form a new government, following centuries of tradition.
Her family journeyed to Balmoral Castle to be with her in her final moments.
According to multiple reports, then-Prince Charles; his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall; Prince Andrew; Princess Anne; Prince Edward and Prince William rushed to Balmoral.
Fox News noted that โPrince Harry and his wife, Meghan, are heading there as well.โ
British television stations paused their regular programming to provide the public with updates on the queen. Deadline reported that โthe BBC has now suspended flagship network BBC One's schedule until 6 p.m. local time as coverage of the Queen's medical condition continues.โ
Queen Elizabeth II was the monarch for 70 years. Her father died in February 1952, and she was formally coronated in June 1953.
Although the monarchy stays out of the day-to-day politics of the country, it does play a role in the transition of England's prime ministers. The queen has overseen the transition of 15 prime ministers, most recently Liz Truss who formally succeed Boris Johnson two days ago.
Winston Churchill was the first prime minister of the queen's 70-year reign. Margaret Thatcher was another notable PM of her era and the queen's longest-serving prime minister having served in that role from 1979 to 1990. More recent prime ministers to have served the queen include Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson.
Elizabeth II was the last world leader to have been a member of the Greatest Generation. Despite the privilege of her position, she came of age during the Great Depression and witnessed the rise of Nazi Germany. During the Blitz, it was suggested that Princess Elizabeth and her sister Margaret be evacuated from London to Canada, far from the reach of Luftwaffe fighters. Her mother rejected the proposal out of hand. By the war's end, Elizabeth served the Empire as a mechanic and driver in the all-female Auxiliary Territorial Service.
The abdication of Elizabeth's uncle, King Edward VIII, unexpectedly put her in line at an early age to assume the throne. Her father's failing health, exacerbated by the stress of World War II, meant that a lifetime of public service came sooner for Elizabeth than expected.
Yet she rose to the occasion and forged a powerful legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
With Elizabeth's passing, her son Charles, 73, immediately ascended to the throne.
