Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed a bill that is poised to have significant consequences for transgender youth in her state.
On Friday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki fired a warning shot at GOP-led states pursuing LGBTQ legislation, especially Alabama. From the Brady Press Briefing Room, she admonished the Yellowhammer State for โtarget[ing] trans youth with tactics that threaten to put pediatricians in prison if they provide medically necessary, lifesaving healthcareโฆโ
The bill makes prescribing gender-affirming treatments a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. It also prohibits gender transition surgeries for people under 19, although those operations are typically performed on adults.
In her statement on Friday, Psaki revealed that the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services have put โAlabama's lawmakers and other legislatorsโ โon notice.โ
Despite potentially severe repercussions, Ivey remains undeterred, as The Hill reports:
โThere are very real challenges facing our young people, especially with today's societal pressures and modern culture,โ Ivey said Friday in a statement. โI believe very strongly that if the Good Lord made you a boy, you are a boy, and if he made you a girl, you are a girl.โ
โWe should especially protect our children from these radical, life-altering drugs and surgeries when they are at such a vulnerable stage in life,โ Ivey said.
Alabama lawmakers had sent the measure to Ivey's desk on Thursday โ an action that was immediatelyย met with a warningย from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Lambda Legal, the Transgender Law Center and the law firm Cooley LLP threatening to sue the state should the bill be signed into law.
โIf the state moves forward in passing this unconstitutional bill, we'll see them in court,โ Kaitlin Welborn, staff attorney for the ACLU of Alabama, said Thursday.

Praise God for Alabama Governor Kay Ivey for having the guts and tenacity to sign the bill to block the use of puberty blockers and sex change surgeries in the youth of her state. I wish more Governors would follow her lead.
There is nothing “medically lifesaving” about removing breasts and sexual organs unless they are cancerous or otherwise infected. Sex change surgery is barbaric; it destroys the human body. Those who undergo this mutilation often commit suicide withing ten years of the operation. The long term effects of taking hormone blocker is unknown, what is known is if the individual ceases taking the drugs the body will revert to type. That reversion proves that we are XX or XY, that sex is immutable–that’s following the science!
Studies prove that 60% of the people who go through a sex change regret the transition within 10-15 years. Also, before any hormone is given these individuals need skilled psycho-therapy which is now forbidden for psychiatrists and psychologists to do. Whose tail is wagging the dog.
