Former President Donald Trump has withdrawn his lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James (D).
Trump sued James in response to her office's $250 million lawsuit against the 45th president, three of his children โ Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka โ and the Trump organization, alleging โstaggering fraud.โ
James' 220-page suit followed a years-long civil investigation into the Trump family's real estate business, theย Trump Organization. The investigation has centered on whether the former president's company misled investors and tax authorities by inflating property values to get investments and subsequently deflating them to get tax and loan benefits.
The defendants also include the Trump Organization, other Trump-affiliated businesses and two longtime executives, ex-Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg and Weisselberg's right-hand man, Jeff McConney.
James previously rejected an offer from the former president's legal team to settle the civil investigation into his business.
The legal retreat by Trump comes one day after he and his lead attorney were fined nearly $1 million for filing a โcompletely frivolousโ lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and other perceived enemies. (RELATED: Judge Sanctions Trump for โCompletely Frivolous' Clinton Lawsuit)
The Daily Beast explains:
The filing,ย made in Palm Beach County court, was curtโit merely stated that Trump โhereby voluntarily dismisses his claims in this action.โ There was no explanation given.
But the cryptic move comes as Trump's legal woes are mounting: judges have increasingly taken tougher stances against him for misusing the nation's court system to slow down legitimate law enforcement efforts against him.
Earlier this month, New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur F. Engoronย reprimanded Trumpย for wasting the court's time with what he deemed โfrivolousโ legal maneuversโand the judge threatened his lawyer, Alina Habba, with sanctions.
Then, on Thursday night, U.S. District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks took the remarkable step of slapping Habba and Trump with a $937,989 fine for their โfrivolousโ lawsuit against his 2016 presidential rival, Hillary Clinton.
Judge Engoron previously set an October 2023 trial date for James' $250 million lawsuit against Trump and the other defendants.
