Bad news for Wisconsinโฆ
Tuesday evening Wisconsin voters rushed to the polls to decide the balance of the state's Supreme Court in what became one of the most expensive races in the state's history.
Democrat-backed Milwaukee County Circuitย Judge Janet Protasiewiczย won the crucial seat, defeating Republican-backed former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly.ย
According to data from Fox News, over 36% of eligible Wisconsin voters participated in the highly-anticipated election, surpassing the previous high of 34% set in the 2011 state Supreme Court race.ย
โI feel great. I could not feel better,โ Protasiewicz told The Associated Press after the win. โI am surprised by the results and the magnitude of the victory here. We are absolutely delighted and thrilled.โ
The court will now be controlled 4-3 by left-leaning justices for at least the next two years. Protasiewicz's win is especially notable due to the court's upcoming docket which includes a pending lawsuit challenging the state's 1849 lawย banning abortion.
Wisconsin's Supreme Court race was also the most expensive in U.S. history, topping $42 million and nearly tripling the previous national record for a court race.
While Republicans currently control the state's general assembly, Democrat Gov. Tony Evers won re-election in November, meaning lawmakers are limited in what laws they can get passed.ย
