A popular former Republican governor will not be running for president in 2024.
Larry Hogan, who served two terms as the chief executive for the state of Maryland, announced his decision Sunday.
It follows comments he made that indicated he would pass on a run if he felt it would inadvertently help former President Donald Trump.
Per Fox News:
โI did give it serious consideration, and I talked to people everywhere, and I talked to my family, and it was a tough decision, but I've decided that I willย not be a candidateย for the Republican nomination for president,โ Hogan told CBS's โFace the Nationโ in a sit-down interview to air in full Sunday.ย
โIt's really mostly about the country and about the party,โ Hogan said. โThe personal decision โ it was like, I didn't need that job. I didn't need to run for another officeโฆ I was considering it because I thought it was a public service, and maybe I could make a difference.โ
โI didn't want to have a pileup of a bunch of people fighting. Right now, you have Trump and DeSantis at the top of the field soaking up all of the oxygen, getting all of the attention,โ he added. โAnd then a whole lot of the rest of us in single digits. And the more of them you have, the less chance you have for somebody rising up.โ
Asked about going up against affronts from formerย President Donald Trump,ย Hogan said, โThat really didn't scare me. You're right, it would be a tough race, and he's very tough, you know. But I beat life-threatening cancer, so having Trump call me names on Twitter didn't really scare me off.โ
Hogan's decision comes after rampant speculation, as reported last month by American Liberty News:
Maryland's former Republican Governorย Larry Hoganย has frequently been included in the growing list of 2024 presidential contenders in recent weeks, and he seemed to add fuel to that speculation during aย Fox Newsย appearance.
During an interview with Fox's Neil Cavuto, Hogan shared the following about his track record:
As a former two-term governor of a blue state and prominent Trump critic, Hogan believes he can bridge the gap with independent and Democrat voters enough to land him in the White House in 2024.
Speaking on Trump's candidacy, Hogan said the following:
