Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), a youthful, pro-business Democrat, is considering a primary challenge against President Joe Biden.
Phillips represents a formerly Republican-leaning district comprising several of the Twin Cities wealthiest suburbs. According to CNN, he's receiving encouragement to run from Democrats concerned with Biden's electability and age.
The Minnesota representative will travel to New York City later this week to discuss a potential White House run with donors:
Phillips has said publicly he does not believe Biden should run for reelection, telling a Minnesota radio station last year that the country โwould be well served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats to step up.โ
Some Democrats have privately raised concerns about Biden's advanced age, and Phillips' planned meeting comes with age currently front-and-center on the political stage.
Bidenย fell in publicย earlier this summer; the Senate minority leader,ย Mitch McConnell, froze up at a news conference earlier this week; and Democrats have grappled with the health challenges besettingย Sen. Dianne Feinsteinย of California.
Phillips, 54, is also significantly younger than Biden's long-shot primary challengers, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson.
