Polls show Republican nominee Lee Zeldin within striking distance of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D).
Zeldin believes New Yorkers have hit their breaking point with Hochul's administration. In her short time in office, critics say Hochul has mastered Albany's pay-to-play culture.
Beyond the allegations of corruption, Democratic policies like cashless bail appear too far left for many New Yorkers and may be enough to propel Zeldin to the governor's mansion.
But Zeldin laments the cost of bail reform, which he blames for the death of a young woman in suburban Buffalo.
Keaira Bennefield, of Cheektowaga, was shot and killed less than 24 hours after her husband was arrested and charged with a litany of domestic violence-related charges, including assault, harassment and menacing.
Keaira's husband, Adam Bennefield, is believed to have murdered her after being released on cashless bail.
Police are still looking for Adam and warning residents that he's considered dangerous. Keaira was reportedly so frightened of her husband that she was killed while wearing a bulletproof vest.
Buffalo's WGRZ reports:
The release also comes after Bennefield had already spent 15 years behind bars for kidnapping. Zeldin says his criminal history should have been able to be taken into consideration.
โThese charges that were brought should be bail eligible,โ Zeldin said. โThe judge should have the ability to keep this person detained.โ
But attorney Barry Covert says that doesn't paint the whole picture.
โTo think that the judge should have anticipated that somebody charged with misdemeanors is now going to be at risk of committing a homicide is a real stretch,โ Covert said.
If elected governor, Zeldin says he may declare a crime emergency to invalidate bail reform laws.

Since when is kidnapping considered a misdemeanor? This man spent 15 years in jail on a charge of kidnapping and his lawyer is saying that he has only been charged with misdemeanors in the past.
In NY he’s a hero and she, being a she and not some pronoun, isn’t with an ounce of rat pee.
only by democrats, NY as a whole condemns this left policy.
Those who failed to properly handle the situation by arresting this savage with no bail are complicit in the crime.
This tragedy is the DIRECT RESULT of democrat influence/control. The democrat party is a DIRECT THREAT to our Constitutional Representative Republic.
DemocRATS love criminals and their savage/animal behavior.
That is just great. Not only are illegal immigrants from prisons are coming into our country, but we also have Democrats turning murderers and every other crime committer loose in our country. This is just complete disrespect for legal people that live and abide by our laws.
So without the former laws and bail having to be paid, she would not have been killed by her extremely violent homocidel husband. (Excuse spelling) The laws were all changed or completely erased. Now who is responsible for that??? HHMMM
Well, to me, the voters are complicit in the crime since they put the Dem trash in office.
New fking Yorkers deserve very fking thing that happens to them. They elected every pos they could find, who would willingly and happily create this situation, so die you stupid pikes. No one gives a fk. And be sure to elect Hochul. You deserve everything she will bring.
And let’s not forget “failure to prosecute”, “defund police”, as well as bail laws when looking at things needing reform. If this was limited to NY it would be bad enough, but it is a nationwide problem. The common denominator, though, is that it is focused on large urban areas and states with “progressive” Democrat governments.
Mid-terms are a good chance to BEGIN (it is not a one-and-done issue) unscrewing this, but you have to start somewhere and this is a good time to do so.
He`s probably got a line on some really twitching dope he sold the judge.
