A second California Democrat is preparing to announce their campaign for the seat currently held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
According to reports from The Hill, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) is planning to become the second prominentย entrant into California's Senate race.
A source informed The Hill that Lee told members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) on Wednesday that she intends to dive into the race.
After the Black Caucus meeting, Lee said she did broach the issue of the Senate race with the group but did not go so far as to announce her intent to jump into the race. She said her top priority is addressing the floods in her district and across the state. ย
โI said there's a time and a place that I'll talk about this, because I'm planning โ but not now โ to talk about it. That I'm concentrating on working with my district, and with California, on the devastating floods. And with all respect to Sen. Feinstein, that there's a time and a place to talk about it, because I respect her and her decisions,โ Lee said. โThat what I said.โ ย
Lee said she has spoken directly with Feinstein, but did not reveal the substance of the discussion.
โThere's a time and a place to talk about it, and you've got to respect Sen. Feinstein for her long service,โ Lee said. โWe'll talk about it when the time is right.โ
Lee's plans to dive into the Senate race come on the heels of another California Democrat's announcement.
On Tuesday, Rep. Katie Porter announced her plans to pursue the seat currently held by Sen. Feinstein. (RELATED: Rep. Katie Porter Announces US Senate Run)
Rumors of Feinstein's retirement have been swirling for months as the lawmaker approaches her 90th birthday. However, she has yet to make any formal announcement.
โEveryone is of course welcome to throw their hat in the ring, and I will make an announcement concerning my plans for 2024 at the appropriate time,โ Feinstein said in a statement on Tuesday. โRight now I'm focused on ensuring California has all the resources it needs to cope with the devastating storms slamming the state and leaving more than a dozen dead.โ
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is also widely expected to launch a campaign for the Senate seat.
