Citizens of Yellowknife and the surrounding area have received orders to evacuate as wildfires encroach on the Northwest Territories capital city.
Multiple conflagrations fueled by drought conditions and warmer-than-average temperatures now threaten the lives and livelihoods of 26,000 Canadians, roughly 60% of the Northwest Territories' population.
The Yellowknife Highway is Yellowknife's only land-based connection to the rest of Canada. With the highway threatened, flights to and from Edmonton, Alberta, have increased to assist with the evacuation effort.
Everyone remaining in Yellowknife must leave by Friday at noon.
